Objective assignment will meet:
• Provide assistance to the students to produce a paper that meets the required criteria [see Acute Care Case Study Criteria sheet at http://www.delta.edu/bazieman/N250/index.html ].
• The student will be required to submit a template [see Acute Care Case Study Template at http://www.delta.edu/bazieman/N250/index.html] of the formal paper required in the course.
• Students would benefit by receiving feedback from the instructor prior to submission of the actual paper.
• By submitting it to the “Wiki” site, the student will receive feedback without having to arrange a time to "meet" face to face with the Instructor.
• It will also be proposed that all students agree to view each others template and feedback so that the group will benefit from feedback the individual receives. This recognizes learning theories that stress repetition in facilitation of learning.
Description of previous assignment:
• The student was not required to submit a template for feedback. As of Fall 2005 through Fall 2006 the criteria was 85% the same. The “rough draft” that was encouraged to be submitted was not a template and was not required. The rough draft was encouraged strongly by 50% of the Instructors.
Rationale for assignment revision:
• Approximately 50 % of the students took advantage of the opportunity to submit this rough draft. The finished product was consistently of poor quality over the 3 years that I have been at this level [Fall 2003-Winter 2006]. Based on this less than stellar product, I opted in Fall 2006 to do a “pilot” of the template offered by the Speaker Help Desk. I am on the General Education Committee and on the ad hoc “Speaking Effectively” Committee so I am familiar with the college goals with regard to general education goals.
• This “template” pilot was conducted with my clinical students as well as with my adjunct’s clinical students. Of interest, my adjunct had 3 students who would not be required to submit this template as they were not part of my theory group. This is in no way a criticism!!! Thank goodness for the ability to be creative at Delta College!!
• By far the finished product was superior to what has been submitted in the past 7 semesters that I have been at this level. My adjunct, who is very experienced at evaluating this project agreed that the finished product was much better than she had experienced. This adjunct has evaluated this same project for well over six YEARS! I felt the pilot results were significant enough to pursue the idea.
Technology to be used:
• Wiki. All links would be made from this site so the student only enters one site and navigates from there. The Instructor would provide feedback in a different color font and publish this ideally to the group [see rationale above]. I am working on developing a shell.
Instructions students will need to use technology:
• I have to learn this first but it would need to be step by step instruction.
Brief description of content students will need to accomplish assignment (textbook, websites, lectures, videos, resources):
• Patient chart; Medical Surgical textbook, diagnostic manual, pharmacology book, nursing journal and/or online resource(s) to obtain the required data. The student will be required to select web resources that meet the “credible” criteria as published by Delta College LLIC.
Instructions for students to complete assignment:
• Click on this link to access the template and criteria for the acute care case study. {Nadine: I have to activate this content on my website so this link will only take you so far at this point} http://www.delta.edu/bazieman/N250/index.html
• Click on this site to access the LLIC page where you will find APA information and all of the assistance they can offer you. The paper does require citation of references in APA format as that is the format required in BSN and advanced nursing degrees. http://www.delta.edu/library/
Grading criteria, rubric, and assessment:
• This template will not be graded but failure to submit it will result in a deduction of five points from the possible thirty points. See above for rationale. http://www.delta.edu/bazieman/N250/index.html
